Co-hosts Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 for the first time in the nation’s history after captain Stephen Eustáquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa at SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles.
With extra time looming, Eustáquio unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area in the second minute of added time, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Canadian supporters and securing a historic knockout-stage triumph.
The victory sends Jesse Marsch’s side into the last 16, where they will face the winner of Tuesday’s clash between Morocco and the Netherlands in Monterrey.
Both Canada and South Africa were making their first-ever appearances in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, and the occasion was reflected in a cautious opening.
Neither side was willing to overcommit in attack, with chances at a premium throughout a tense first half.
Canada came closest in the 22nd minute when Derek Cornelius directed a header on target, only for South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to make a comfortable save.
The Canadians continued to increase the pressure before halftime. Their best opportunity arrived in the 44th minute when Moïse Bombito‘s header was brilliantly denied by Williams before follow-up efforts from Cornelius and Tajon Buchanan were desperately blocked by South African defenders in quick succession.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with South Africa remaining disciplined defensively while looking to strike on the counterattack.
Oswin Appollis tested Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau with a long-range effort in the 62nd minute before Canada responded moments later.
Substitute Tani Oluwaseyi found himself one-on-one with Williams, but the South African goalkeeper produced another outstanding save. The loose ball eventually fell to Jonathan David, whose effort was heroically cleared off the line by Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
One of the biggest moments of the evening came in the 75th minute when Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies made his long-awaited tournament debut after missing Canada’s first three matches through injury.
Davies immediately injected pace and urgency into Canada’s attack, taking over the captain’s armband and nearly creating the breakthrough just one minute after entering the match. His intelligent pass found Jonathan David, who laid the ball into the path of Promise David, but the forward’s effort drifted narrowly wide.
Jonathan David continued to threaten, forcing another sharp save from Williams in the 78th minute, while Appollis nearly stole victory for South Africa with a low strike that was well handled by Crépeau.
With the match seemingly destined for extra time, Canada found their decisive moment.
