Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni insists his reigning world champions are fully focused on delivering their highest level of performance as they prepare to defend their FIFA World Cup crown against Spain in the 2026 World Cup Final.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Scaloni stressed that Argentina’s preparations have followed the same disciplined approach used throughout the tournament, while acknowledging that only their very best performance will be enough to overcome the European champions.
“We are preparing just like we have for every match—with great enthusiasm, determination, and a willingness to analyse our opponent,” Scaloni said.
“We need to produce our best version if we want to win.”
Scaloni believes his squad enters the final in good condition despite recognising there is always room for improvement.
The 48-year-old highlighted that Argentina’s continued success has become even more remarkable because every opponent now understands exactly how they play.
“I think we’re in a good place, although there are always things we can improve.”
“We are a team that every opponent already knows well, which makes reaching another final even more impressive. We will do everything we can to win it.”
Scaloni also delivered encouraging news regarding his squad’s fitness.
“Tomorrow’s training session will be important, but at this stage all of the players are available and doing well.”
The World Cup-winning coach admitted it is impossible not to be emotionally affected by the incredible support coming from Argentina throughout the tournament.
“It’s impossible not to be touched by everything our people are experiencing.”
“We play for them, and we’ve helped recover something truly valuable—that people can stand in front of the television and embrace supporters from rival clubs while cheering for the same national team.”
Scaloni believes showing emotion is a strength rather than a weakness.
“It’s good to show emotions. They’re part of life and part of who we are. They make us more human.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s showdown, Scaloni praised Spain’s football philosophy, describing the two finalists as teams that share a similar identity built around possession.
“We are two national teams that base everything around the ball.”
“Our playing principles are clearly centred on possession. There are some differences, but fundamentally we think in a similar way.”
The Argentina boss revealed his coaching staff have been studying potential World Cup opponents since December, but insisted there has been no excessive focus on Spain alone.
“We’ve been analysing potential World Cup opponents since December. It’s not as though we’ve studied Spain more than anyone else.”
“Over-analysing isn’t healthy either. These are two teams that know each other very well.”
Scaloni reserved his biggest praise for captain Lionel Messi, who has guided Argentina to yet another World Cup final at the age of 39.
“For Leo to reach another World Cup final at this stage of his career, at 39 years old, is simply incredible.”
“We have to appreciate everything he continues to do, the history he has written, and the legend he has become—not only him, but this entire group of players that has given us so many unforgettable years.”
Regardless of Sunday’s outcome, Scaloni believes his players have already secured a place among Argentina’s greatest generations.
“Our coaching staff will always be grateful to these players.”
“Competing at this level for so many years isn’t easy. It’s something truly extraordinary.”
“Of course we hope to win, but the journey itself has already been incredible and an example for everyone.”
