FIFA has confirmed that Leandro Paredes will face no disciplinary action following the heated altercations that erupted after Argentina’s 0-1 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final.
According to a BBC report, FIFA reviewed the incidents that occurred after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium and decided not to impose any sanctions on the Argentina midfielder or several other members of the Albiceleste delegation.
Initial reports suggested that Paredes had been shown a red card following an off-the-ball confrontation with Spain midfielder Gavi, after allegedly pushing the Barcelona star in the face and neck during the post-match scuffle.
However, FIFA later removed the dismissal from the official match record following its review, confirming that Paredes will not serve any suspension or receive further punishment.
FIFA also confirmed that several other incidents from the post-match confrontation will not result in disciplinary measures.
Among those cleared are:
- Nahuel Molina, following his confrontation with Spain captain Rodri.
- Thiago Almada, after pushing Gavi during the altercation.
- Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala, who was involved in separate confrontations with Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo during the heated exchanges.
Despite the intensity of the scenes following Spain’s historic World Cup triumph, FIFA concluded that no further sporting sanctions were warranted.
The confrontation came moments after Spain secured their second FIFA World Cup title, defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time thanks to Ferran Torres’ decisive goal in the 106th minute.
The result ended Argentina’s hopes of retaining the World Cup and denied Lionel Scaloni’s side a place in history as the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the trophy.
As emotions spilled over at the final whistle, players and staff from both teams became involved in several confrontations before officials restored order.
