Indonesian football giants Persija Jakarta have made one of the biggest managerial moves ahead of the new Liga 1 season by appointing former Indonesia national team head coach Shin Tae-yong as their new manager.
The announcement was officially revealed through the club’s social media platforms, confirming the return of one of the most influential figures in modern Indonesian football to the country’s domestic game.
In a video introducing him to Persija supporters, the South Korean tactician outlined his vision for the club and reiterated his long-standing commitment to youth development.
“I have always believed in the potential of young players for the progress of football in Jakarta and Indonesia,” said Shin.
“I am Shin Tae-yong, the new head coach of Persija Jakarta. Let’s move forward together and bring success back to this city,” he added.
Shin’s appointment is expected to generate enormous excitement among Indonesian football fans, having become one of the most respected foreign coaches ever to lead the national team.
The 55-year-old guided Indonesia between 2020 and 2025, overseeing a transformative period that elevated the country’s status within Asian football.
Among his most notable achievements was leading Indonesia National Football Team to the knockout stage of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.
He also masterminded Indonesia’s impressive run to the semi-finals of the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup, a breakthrough achievement that showcased the country’s emerging generation of talent.
Those accomplishments transformed Shin into a national sporting icon and significantly raised expectations for Indonesian football on the international stage.
Following his departure from the national team setup, Shin returned to South Korea where he took charge of Seongnam FC and later Ulsan HD FC.
However, neither spell developed into a long-term project, with both partnerships ending sooner than anticipated.
Now, Shin returns to familiar surroundings and a football environment where he already enjoys immense support and admiration.
Persija’s decision to appoint Shin comes as the club seeks to restore its position among Indonesia’s elite after several seasons of frustration.
The Jakarta-based giants have watched their fiercest rivals, Persib Bandung, dominate domestic football by winning three consecutive Liga 1 titles.
For a club with Persija’s stature and passionate fanbase, reclaiming the championship has become the primary objective.
The arrival of Shin is widely viewed as a statement of intent.
Known for his tactical discipline, high-intensity football, and ability to develop young talent, the South Korean coach possesses the qualities many believe are needed to challenge Persib’s recent dominance.
