The Malaysian Stadium Corporation (PSM), in charge of the Axiata Arena, has outlined a series of immediate measures to address and prevent further disruptions following the roof leakage incident that halted matches at the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2025.
The BWF Super 1000 World Tour event experienced delays on Tuesday due to heavy rain that caused water to drip onto the courts.
The leak occurred during matches on Courts 2 and 3, disrupting the women’s doubles match involving Malaysia’s Go Pei Kee/Teoh Mei Xing against China’s Jia Yi Fan/Zhang Shu Xian and the men’s singles match between Brian Yang of Canada and Prannoy HS of India.
In a media statement issued today, PSM detailed four critical actions undertaken in collaboration with the Public Works Department (JKR) and contractors:
- Redirecting Water: Since 4:30 PM yesterday, efforts have been made to divert rainwater away from the affected areas, allowing matches to resume later in the evening.
- On-Site Monitoring: Over ten personnel have been stationed on the roof throughout the tournament to monitor and address potential leaks immediately.
- Ongoing Repairs: JKR and contractors are working diligently to implement appropriate repairs and ensure the roof is secured during the event.
- Expedited Work on Problem Areas: PSM has identified the affected sections of the roof and accelerated repair efforts to prevent further issues.
These matches were halted after heavy rain caused water to seep through the roof, soaking the courts. Play resumed later in the evening after PSM’s interventions.
PSM clarified that the Axiata Arena has been undergoing a roof replacement project since mid-2024, replacing the original roof installed in 1998. The project, conducted by contractors appointed by JKR, is being executed without shutting down the venue, ensuring that events can continue as planned.
PSM also emphasized that no prior incidents of leaks had been reported since the replacement process began last year.
PSM Chief Executive Officer Ilyas Jamil reiterated the agency’s commitment to resolving the issue:
“We regret the inconvenience caused to the players, fans, and organisers. Immediate measures are in place to ensure that the tournament proceeds smoothly without further interruptions.”
