Malaysia’s hopes of reaching the finals in the men’s and women’s singles events at the 33rd SEA Games Thailand 2025 came to an end following a series of intense semi-final encounters on Thursday.
Despite strong resistance and moments of brilliance, Malaysian shuttlers were outplayed by higher-ranked and more experienced opponents, settling for joint bronze medals under SEA Games rules.
National men’s singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao [4] saw his campaign halted after a straight-game defeat to Indonesia’s Zaki Ubaidillah (18-21, 13-21).
Leong struggled to contain Zaki’s relentless attacking play and sharp net control. The Indonesian dictated the tempo from the outset, forcing Leong into defensive rallies and capitalising on unforced errors to seal victory in two games
Malaysia’s other men’s singles representative, Justin Hoh, put up a spirited fight but was eventually overpowered by second seed Alwi Farhan of Indonesia by 1-2 (10-21, 21-15, 14-21).
Justin showed resilience by bouncing back strongly in the second game after a one-sided opener. However, Alwi’s composure and tactical awareness proved decisive in the decider, ending Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s singles draw.
In the women’s singles semi-final, Wong Ling Ching came agonisingly close to creating an upset against Thailand’s former world champion Ratchanok Intanon, but eventually bowed out after three hard-fought games by 1-2 (11-21, 21-18, 17-21).
Wong stunned the home crowd by forcing the match into a decider with an aggressive second-game display. However, Ratchanok’s experience under pressure shone through in the final game, as she regained control to book her place in the final.
Although none of the Malaysian singles players progressed to the finals, their semi-final finishes underline encouraging progress, particularly from the younger shuttlers competing on a major regional stage.
With doubles events still offering medal opportunities, Malaysia’s badminton camp remains optimistic as the SEA Games continue.
