Malaysia’s world champions Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei are gearing up for a high-stakes showdown in Sydney in the SATHIO GROUP Australian Open 2025 at Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney.
The world No. 4 mixed doubles pair produced a composed, professional performance to defeat Thailand’s world No. 65 duo Pakkapon Teeraratsakul–Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-16, 21-14 in a 50-minute semifinal on Saturday.
Though not at their absolute best, Tang Jie–Ee Wei exerted control when it mattered most, showing the sharpness and temperament that took them to the world title.
Standing between the Malaysians and the Australian Open crown are Indonesia’s fast-rising world No. 11 pair Jafar Hidayatullah–Felisha Pasaribu, who overcame Thailand’s world No. 12 Ruttanapak Oupthong–Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat in a gritty three-game battle (19-21, 21-13, 21-14).
The Sydney final serves as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand next month, where Jafar–Felisha are expected to be one of Malaysia’s biggest roadblocks in the chase for mixed doubles gold.
For Tang Jie–Ee Wei, a win this weekend would be worth far more than ranking points — it would be a psychological statement.
The world champions have record win all 4 matches faced the Indonesian duo previous.
Remarkably, this is only Tang Jie–Ee Wei’s second World Tour final appearance of the year.
Their previous attempt came at the China Masters in September, where they fell to Thailand’s world No. 3 Dechapol Puavaranukroh–Supissara Paewsampran, the clear SEA Games favourites.
Malaysia’s last World Tour title in mixed doubles also belongs to this pair — but that was 14 months ago at the Korea Open. The drought has been long, and Sunday offers the perfect chance to end it in style.
Extending that streak in Sydney would give the Malaysians invaluable confidence ahead of their expected SEA Games individual event semifinal clash, scheduled for December 11–14 in Pathum Thani.
Regardless of the outcome in Australia, Tang Jie–Ee Wei will compete at the season-ending World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, marking another milestone in their rapid rise as one of badminton’s elite partnerships.
