BG Pathum United have confirmed the appointment of Masatada Ishii as their new head coach, marking a significant addition to the club’s leadership as they look to reassert their dominance in Thai football.
The 57-year-old Japanese tactician arrives with a decorated managerial résumé, having led some of Asia’s top clubs and most recently managed the Thailand National Team.
Ishii built his reputation in the J.League with Kashima Antlers, guiding the club to multiple titles — including the 2015 J.League YBC Levain Cup, the 2016 J.League Championship, and the 2016 Emperor’s Cup. His Antlers side also achieved global recognition by finishing runners-up at the FIFA Club World Cup 2016, losing narrowly to Real Madrid in the final.
Following spells in Japan with Omiya Ardija, Ishii moved to Thailand in 2019 to take charge of Samut Prakan City, leading them to an impressive 6th-place finish in Thai League 1 — the best in the club’s history.
In 2021, Ishii took over Buriram United, where he delivered an unprecedented domestic treble in both the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, securing two Thai League 1 titles, two Chang FA Cups, and two Revo Cups.
In 2023, Ishii was appointed as head coach of the Thailand National Team, leading the War Elephants to the Round of 16 at the AFC Asian Cup 2023 in Qatar. His tenure also covered major competitions such as the FIFA World Cup 2026 Asian Qualifiers and the 2024 ASEAN Championship.
BG Pathum United, known as “The Rabbits”, see Ishii’s arrival as a key step in revitalizing their competitive ambitions both domestically and regionally. His vast experience in managing top-tier teams and his success in Thailand’s football landscape align with BGPU’s long-term vision of sustained excellence.
With Ishii now at the helm, the Pathum Thani-based side are expected to strengthen their squad and tactical identity ahead of the upcoming Thai League campaign.
