Redemption came sweetly for Alex Marquez as the BK8 Gresini Racing rider conquered the CatalanGP, holding off his brother Marc Marquez in a thrilling duel to claim his second career MotoGP victory.
After heartbreak in Saturday’s Sprint, Alex delivered the perfect response, crossing the line 1.7 seconds clear of Marc to take a memorable win on home soil. The result also ends the #93’s dominant unbeaten streak, though the Ducati Lenovo Team rider’s second-place finish keeps him firmly in control of the championship race.
Completing the podium was Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3), who celebrated his first Sunday rostrum with KTM, marking a significant step forward in his campaign.
Marc made the stronger start, seizing the early lead into Turn 1, but Alex struck back on Lap 4 with a decisive move into the first corner. From there, the two brothers broke away, trading lap times nearly a second faster than the chasing pack.
Bastianini briefly threatened with his blistering mid-race pace, but as the laps wore on, the Catalan crowd braced for an all-Marquez showdown. Despite Marc’s pressure, Alex remained composed, gradually extending his advantage in the closing stages. By the final lap, the younger Marquez had done enough to ensure victory – a fitting redemption after his Sprint crash at Turn 10 just a day earlier.
The race was not without incident. Early podium contenders Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannantonio both crashed out on Lap 2, while Johann Zarco’s strong ride ended in the gravel at Turn 10. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta faded after a strong start, eventually finishing fourth, with Fabio Quartararo securing fifth after an intense scrap.
World Champion Francesco Bagnaia staged a remarkable comeback from P22 on the grid to finish seventh, while Ai Ogura impressed with his first top-six since Thailand.
The Catalan GP closes with a powerful message: Marc Marquez’s reign isn’t untouchable. With Alex rising to the occasion in Barcelona, the championship battle will now roll on to Misano and beyond.
For the Marquez brothers, though, it was a weekend to remember – a historic 1-2 finish in front of their home fans.
