Italian sensation Kimi Antonelli delivered another statement performance at the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix after storming to a dominant victory in a dramatic race filled with crashes, penalties, heartbreak and mechanical failures at the iconic Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.
The young Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team star extended his championship lead to 43 points after teammate George Russell cruelly retired from the race while leading on Lap 30 due to a power unit failure.
What initially looked set to become a fierce Mercedes civil war quickly transformed into Antonelli’s crowning moment in Montreal.
The opening phase of the race delivered one of the most intense intra-team duels of the 2026 Formula 1 season as Russell and Antonelli repeatedly traded positions in slippery and unpredictable conditions.
Russell initially appeared in control after converting his pole position advantage into the lead, but Antonelli kept relentless pressure on the Briton throughout the first 30 laps.
Several aggressive wheel-to-wheel moments between the pair raised tensions inside the Mercedes garage, with Antonelli even questioning team orders after briefly overtaking Russell before being instructed to hand the position back.
However, the drama reached a devastating climax when Russell suddenly slowed with a technical issue before parking his Mercedes at the side of the circuit. The frustrated Briton slammed his fists against the cockpit before climbing out of the car as a Virtual Safety Car was deployed.
That moment completely shifted the complexion of the race.
Antonelli immediately capitalised during the pit sequence and emerged comfortably ahead of Max Verstappen, before cruising unchallenged to his fourth consecutive victory of the campaign.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton produced one of his strongest performances since joining Scuderia Ferrari by charging to second place.
Hamilton spent much of the race battling Verstappen in a tense strategic fight before eventually sweeping around the outside of the Red Bull star at Turn 1 in the closing stages.
The Ferrari driver crossed the line 10.7 seconds behind Antonelli, while Verstappen settled for third and secured his first podium finish of the season.
Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc finished fourth despite several on-track scares, while Isack Hadjar salvaged fifth place for Red Bull despite receiving two separate penalties during the race.
It proved to be a disastrous afternoon for McLaren as both drivers endured a miserable Canadian Grand Prix.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris briefly led the race after a sensational launch off the line, but McLaren’s gamble to start on intermediate tyres backfired badly.
Norris was later forced to retire with a gearbox issue after multiple pit stops and off-track excursions, while teammate Oscar Piastri suffered contact with Alex Albon that eliminated the Williams driver from the race.
Piastri was handed a 10-second penalty for causing the collision and eventually finished outside the points in 11th place.
At just 19 years old, Antonelli continues to mature into a genuine championship contender.
The Italian handled the immense pressure from Russell flawlessly before controlling the latter stages with remarkable composure far beyond his years.
His fourth straight victory now places him firmly at the top of the standings and strengthens growing belief that Formula 1 may be witnessing the rise of its next superstar.
With momentum fully on his side and Mercedes showing impressive race pace, Antonelli heads into the next round carrying both confidence and a commanding championship advantage.
