Malaysia shuttlers Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei etched their names in Malaysian badminton history after powering into the semi-finals of the 2025 World Badminton Championships in Paris, ending the country’s 19-year medal drought in mixed doubles.
The world No. 4 pair put on a commanding display to dismantle India’s 17th-ranked Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto 21-15, 21-13 in just 41 minutes at the Adidas Arena, sealing at least a bronze medal for Malaysia.
Their feat makes them only the second Malaysian mixed doubles pair to reach the World Championships podium, following Koo Kien Kiat and Wong Pei Tty’s bronze in Madrid 2006.
“This victory means so much to us and to Malaysia. We’ve been working hard for this moment, and we’re proud to finally deliver in such a big tournament,” said Tang Jie after the win.
The duo’s relentless pace and sharp net play left their Indian opponents struggling for answers, as the Malaysians dictated rallies with precision and confidence.
Looking ahead, Tang Jie and Ee Wei will face a stern test in the semi-finals against either China’s Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi or home favourites Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue of France.
Regardless of the outcome, the pair’s achievement has already reignited Malaysia’s hopes in the mixed doubles discipline and solidified their status as one of the most exciting partnerships on the world stage.
