Malaysia U20 national team earned another point after tied DPR Korea U20 national team scoring 0-0 in the AFC U20 Asian Cup 2025 Qualifiers Group E at Pamir Stadium, Dushanbe.
Despite the advantage of playing against 10 men for the final 30 minutes, Malaysia was unable to capitalize, leaving the teams deadlocked in Group E.
After their impressive 2-1 victory over Oman in their opening match, the Malaysian side, led by head coach Juan Torres Garrido, came into the match looking to build on their momentum. However, the encounter against DPR Korea proved challenging as Jon Chol’s team dominated much of the game, especially in the first half.
Despite DPR Korea’s early control, both sides struggled to find the back of the net in a tightly contested match. The first half ended goalless, with DPR Korea’s pressing game giving Malaysia limited opportunities to threaten.
The match took a pivotal turn in the 65th minute when DPR Korea was reduced to 10 men. Defender Jong Un Hyok was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Malaysia’s Haykal Danish Mohd Haizon, leaving DPR Korea’s defensive line weakened for the final third of the game.
Malaysia nearly broke the deadlock just two minutes later. Haykal, who had been fouled, stepped up to take a free kick, sending a curling shot toward the left corner of the North Korean goal. However, DPR Korea goalkeeper Hong Kil Ryong was equal to the task, making a vital save to keep the score level.
Despite a numerical advantage and creating several more chances, Malaysia was unable to convert their opportunities into goals. The North Korean defense held firm, and the match concluded with both teams sharing the spoils in a 0-0 stalemate.
With the result, Malaysia remains unbeaten in the tournament, sitting in the top two of Group E with four points, alongside DPR Korea. The draw, however, represents a missed opportunity for Malaysia to secure their second consecutive win in the qualifiers.
Malaysia’s next challenge comes in the form of the host nation, Tajikistan, in a crucial match this Friday at the same venue. The team will then conclude their group stage campaign against Sri Lanka on Sunday, needing a strong finish to boost their chances of advancing to the AFC U20 Asian Cup 2025.
