In the midst of Malaysia’s escalating heritage-player controversy, national head coach Peter Cklamovski has issued a calm and measured message: Harimau Malaya will not be distracted.
The FIFA Appeal Committee yesterday released a 64-page justification detailing why it upheld sanctions against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and seven naturalised players after concluding that falsified documents were submitted during eligibility assessments.
With FAM now preparing to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) — the final legal avenue — the stakes for Malaysia have never been higher. Should CAS rule against FAM, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is expected to consider severe disciplinary measures.
Such a penalty would deal a devastating blow to Malaysia’s ambitions of reaching the Finals in Saudi Arabia.
After Malaysia’s latest win over Nepal, Cklamovski was direct in his response.
“Tonight we are still top of the group. Nothing has changed. We won, we scored, we kept a clean sheet — that’s what changed,” he said.
The Australian tactician made it clear that external controversies will not alter the team’s mindset ahead of their decisive final group match against Vietnam next March.
“I hope people can talk about football and smile because we got three points. What happens next, we don’t know. If we think too much about things we cannot control, we lose our spirit.”
He urged the nation to remain calm, emphasising professionalism and unity as the team’s guiding principles during an unprecedented crisis.
Cklamovski acknowledged his disappointment with the Appeal Committee’s ruling but reiterated that the national team cannot influence legal proceedings.
“Of course it would be better if the situation didn’t exist. But this is the reality. Our job is to focus on what we can control. I’m proud of the players, proud of the staff, and proud of our commitment. Winning in international football is not easy — we’ve gone the whole year unbeaten.”
