Malaysia’s mixed doubles duo Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing concluded a sensational run at the SANDS CHINA LTD Macau Open 2025 with a runner-up finish, falling short in the final against Denmark’s seasoned pair Alexandra Boje and Mathias Christiansen.
Ranked world No. 127 and only partnered five months ago, Jimmy and Pei Jing showed exceptional chemistry throughout the BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament but were outplayed by the world-class Danish pair, losing 12-21, 16-21 in a 44-minute contest.
Despite the loss, the Malaysians made history by reaching their first-ever World Tour final — a remarkable achievement for a newly formed pair. They walk away with US$14,060 (RM60,188) in prize money as runners-up.
The pairing was formed in March following Pei Jing’s split from her long-time partner Tan Kian Meng, who has since retired from international competition. Since then, Jimmy and Pei Jing have made headlines with their fearless performances and upset victories.
Their Macau campaign was marked by giant-killing wins, including a stunning upset of China’s second-seeded pair Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi in the quarter-finals and a dominant performance against India’s world No. 18 duo Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto in the round of 16.
Jimmy and Pei Jing’s breakthrough performance not only showcases their potential as a new force in mixed doubles but also brings fresh hope to Malaysia’s future in the discipline on the world stage.
