Malaysian Football League (MFL) has officially announced that DPMM FC, a Brunei-based club, will join the Liga Super Malaysia for the 2025/26 season as a guest team, pending FIFA approval. The league, now realigned with international calendars, will kick off in August 2025.
DPMM FC’s inclusion signals a significant return to Malaysian football. The club, with deep historical ties to the local scene, first featured in the Malaysia Cup in 1979 and the Semi-Pro League in 1989. Before rebranding as DPMM FC, the Brunei team famously lifted the 1999 Malaysia Cup after defeating Sarawak 2-1 at Stadium Merdeka. In the 2005–2006 Super League season, they finished an impressive third.
Their last appearance in the Super League was in 2008, and MFL has warmly welcomed their return, seeing it as a move that will inject excitement and fresh competition into Malaysian football.
14 Teams Confirmed for the Super League
In addition to DPMM FC, 13 other teams have received National Licenses from the First Instance Body (FIB), including top clubs like:
- Johor Darul Ta’Zim
- Selangor FC
- Sabah FC
- Terengganu FC
- Penang FC
- Kuching City FC
- Sri Pahang FC
- Negeri Sembilan FC
- Kuala Lumpur City FC
- PDRM FC
- Kelantan Darul Naim FC (with sanction)
- Melaka FC
- Imigresen FC (from AFL A1)
Perak FC and Kedah Darul Aman FC failed in their license applications due to outstanding salary issues, reflecting MFL and FIB’s firm stance on financial integrity and professionalism.
