His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail, the Regent of Johor, has provided updates on the status of heritage players and the broader vision for the Malayan Tigers, reaffirming his commitment to elevating Malaysian football to the global stage.
Recently, HRH Tunku Ismail held a significant meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to present the Harimau Malaya revolution project. The initiative, supported by the Malaysian government, is set to transform the national team’s structure and development.
Sharing details on the X platform, HRH Tunku Ismail revealed FIFA’s endorsement of the project:
“Infantino was briefed on the national squad project in Malaysia, initiated by HRH the Regent of Johor and supported by the Malaysian government. He expressed his belief in the national initiative and agreed to provide support in terms of research, infrastructure, and development.”
This collaboration marks a crucial step in Malaysia’s football journey, with FIFA’s backing expected to bring expertise and resources to the country’s football ecosystem.
Addressing the ongoing efforts to identify and recruit heritage players with Malaysian roots, HRH Tunku Ismail acknowledged the challenges faced so far. Despite initial setbacks, he emphasized that the search would continue with a broader scope.
“The thing is, when asked, some people don’t even know where Malaysia is. A more accurate statement is, ‘I’m not Malaysian, and where is Malaysia actually?’” HRH shared candidly.
He added, “We have conducted research and spoken to them, but the search will continue on a wider scale.”
While names like Josh Brownhill, Zian Flemming, and Iggy Houben have been linked in the past, securing commitments from such players remains a work in progress.
The Harimau Malaya squad is now gearing up for the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifying campaign, where they are drawn alongside Vietnam, Nepal, and Laos. With ambitious plans and strategic support from HRH Tunku Ismail and FAM, the national team aims to solidify its position as a competitive force in Asian football.
The Harimau Malaya revolution project underscores HRH Tunku Ismail’s vision of integrating international expertise, infrastructure, and talent into Malaysian football. With FIFA’s involvement and continued efforts to secure heritage players, the project sets the stage for a bright future for Malaysian football on the global stage.
As Malaysia prepares for the Asian Cup qualifiers, the nation’s football enthusiasts remain hopeful that these transformative initiatives will bear fruit and elevate Harimau Malaya to new heights.
