Malaysia national team earned first victory in this month after beating Laos national team scoring 3-1 in the International Match Tier 1 2024 at PAT Stadium, Bangkok.
The match was played on a waterlogged pitch due to heavy rain, hampering both teams’ ability to create fluid attacking moves. Despite the challenging conditions, Malaysia took an early lead in the 6th minute, courtesy of defender Harith Haiqal, who capitalized on a well-timed opportunity.
Laos responded with a determined equalizer in the 33rd minute, as Kydavone Souvanny found the back of the net, leaving the score tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.
With the rain subsiding, the field conditions improved, allowing Malaysia to display a more cohesive and attacking style. Substitute Stuart Wilkin made an immediate impact, regaining the lead for Harimau Malaya in the 64th minute with a well-executed penalty after being fouled by Sengdaovy Hanthavong.
Wilkin nearly doubled his tally in the 77th minute with a precise header from an Aguero cross, but the effort was denied by Laos goalkeeper Keo Oudone Souvannasangso.
Malaysia sealed the victory in the 83rd minute when Aguero converted a second penalty, earned after he was fouled by Phoulaung Vinnavong.
The win reflects the positive strides under head coach Pau Marti Vicente, as Malaysia prepares for their next international friendly against India, ranked 125th in the world, on Monday in Hyderabad.
This result highlights Malaysia’s growing cohesion and ability to adapt to challenging circumstances, with standout performances from Harith Haiqal, Stuart Wilkin, and Aguero. Fans will look forward to the team continuing this momentum against stronger opponents.
