Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) from the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, expressing disappointment over the timing and its impact on ongoing preparations.
Malaysia had confirmed its participation well in advance, with full knowledge of the tournament dates — 29 August to 8 September 2025. Contrary to claims, CAFA clarified that the schedule has remained unchanged since its initial announcement.
In its withdrawal, FAM cited concerns over the tournament’s timing, which partially falls outside the official FIFA international window, potentially limiting the availability of key players. However, CAFA highlighted that tournament regulations offer considerable flexibility, with final squad submissions allowed on a match-by-match basis from a preliminary list of 35 players. This rule was designed specifically to accommodate such player availability challenges, including phased player call-ups.
The late nature of the withdrawal has disrupted CAFA’s advanced planning and logistics, particularly at a crucial stage where fixtures, marketing, and broadcast arrangements are nearing finalization.
Despite the setback, CAFA reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a high-calibre tournament for the people of Central Asia and the broader football community.
“We remain focused on providing a top-level competitive platform and extend our gratitude to the remaining participating nations for their continued trust and collaboration,” the statement concluded.
