UEFA has strongly criticised FIFA’s decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban handed to United States striker Folarin Balogun, describing the move as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable” while warning it could damage the integrity of football.
The European governing body issued a strongly worded statement following FIFA’s ruling to allow Balogun to play in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 despite receiving a straight red card during the United States’ victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The decision has sparked one of the tournament’s biggest off-field controversies, with UEFA openly questioning FIFA’s interpretation and application of its own disciplinary regulations.
In its official statement, UEFA argued that FIFA’s ruling undermines one of football’s most fundamental disciplinary principles.
“Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of one year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line.”
UEFA stressed that football depends on clear and consistently applied regulations.
“Football, like any sport, relies on rules that form the basis of fair, honest and transparent competition.
Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case, they are not.”
UEFA emphasised that an automatic suspension following a straight red card is mandatory and should not be subject to discretionary intervention.
“A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted.
It is a principle embedded in the regulations that cannot be made subject to exceptions—especially in the middle of a tournament where several other players have found themselves in identical situations and served their suspensions.”
The governing body warned that altering disciplinary procedures during the competition risks creating inconsistencies that could affect future cases.
UEFA believes the decision extends beyond Balogun’s individual case and could have lasting consequences for football governance.
“When the certainty of the rules is no longer guaranteed by their guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.”
It also warned that FIFA’s decision establishes a precedent that may force similar treatment in future disciplinary cases during the remainder of the World Cup.
“Such a decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require equal treatment—to the detriment of the competition.”
UEFA concluded by highlighting the broader implications for world football.
“Football is the world’s most loved sport because it is a beautiful game, and it is trusted because it is played everywhere under the same Laws of the Game.
A World Cup is never an isolated event. Decisions taken there have the power to produce positive or negative consequences for football as a whole.
We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”
The statement represents one of UEFA’s strongest public criticisms of FIFA in recent years and adds significant pressure on football’s global governing body to explain the legal basis behind Balogun’s suspended sanction.
FIFA has yet to issue a further response following UEFA’s remarks.
With the World Cup entering its decisive knockout stages, the controversy is expected to remain under intense scrutiny, particularly if future red-card incidents prompt similar requests for suspended disciplinary sanctions.
