As the legal battle for Harimau Malaya’s eligibility continues in the courts of Lausanne, a major piece of the puzzle has been revealed.
Tengku Muda Pahang, YAM Tengku Muda Abdul Rahman Al-Haj, has gone on the record to clarify his role in bringing the now-famous “Magnificent Seven” to Malaysian shores.
In a move of royal transparency, His Highness confirmed that he acted as the initial bridge between international scouts and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
Addressing the speculation surrounding the recruitment of the heritage stars, Tengku Abdul Rahman was clear: his involvement was about talent identification, not red tape.
“Since the end of 2024, agents were reaching out with names of players carrying Malaysian blood. I saw the potential and forwarded these to FAM. My role was simply to highlight these talents for evaluation—I had no hand in the official registration or administrative process,” His Highness stated.
This isn’t the Tengku Muda’s first rodeo with integration. He pointed to his track record with Pahang FC, where he oversaw the successful integration of naturalized pillars like Mohamadou Sumareh, Sergio Aguero, and Lee Tuck.
The logic is simple: quality additions bring tactical depth. For His Highness, the seven players currently under the FIFA/CAS microscope—including Facundo Garces and Rodrigo Holgado—were scouted to provide that same “added value” to the national team.
Crucially, the Tengku Muda reiterated a point that has been hammering home: The players are legally Malaysian. “All of them received their Malaysian citizenship through valid, government-recognized processes,” he noted. This reinforces that the current dispute at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concerns only FIFA’s internal football statutes, not the legitimacy of its passports.
