Malaysia U23 head coach Nafuzi Zain insists his squad will enter tomorrow’s opening match of the 2025 SEA Games men’s football competition with full commitment despite facing significant preparation challenges.
Speaking ahead of Malaysia’s first Group match in Bangkok, Nafuzi openly acknowledged the hurdles his squad faced in the build-up — particularly in assembling players who were still committed to club duties and navigating several logistical constraints.
“Sometimes our plans don’t go as we want, especially with many players involved with their clubs. But I will not use that as an excuse,” Nafuzi stressed.
“We have prepared the best we can based on the players’ condition and the situation we’re in.”
The Malaysian coach issued a firm reminder that tomorrow’s opponents, Laos U23, should not be underestimated. Nafuzi highlighted that several players in the Laos squad had already featured against their senior national team recently — evidence of their growing maturity and competitiveness.
“It will not be easy to beat Laos,” he warned.
“Three or four of their players faced the senior national team recently. I watched that match — Laos fought hard and gave a tough challenge.”
Despite acknowledging the difficulty, Nafuzi made it clear that the target remains unchanged:
“We must play for three points. We must chase victory.”
Malaysia U23 National Team will look to begin their SEA Games campaign on a winning note as Malaysian fans anticipate a strong start from the national U23 side in Bangkok.
