Malaysia’s campaign at the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2026 produced mixed results as several top pairs bowed out, while a handful of contenders kept the national challenge alive following the conclusion of the Round of 16 on Thursday.
In men’s singles, national hopeful Leong Jun Hao was unable to halt the progress of Indonesia’s former world champion Jonatan Christie, going down in straight games 18-21, 11-21 as the Indonesian displayed superior control and experience in key moments.
The spotlight in the men’s doubles fell on reigning world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who showcased their resilience to edge past China’s Chen Xu Jun and Liu Yang in a hard-fought three-game battle 21-14, 14-21, 21-14. The second seeds once again underlined their status as genuine title contenders on home soil.
Also advancing were fifth seeds Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, who delivered one of the most commanding performances of the day by brushing aside Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Kyohei Yamashita 21-9, 21-15.
However, it was the end of the road for seventh seeds Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who were outplayed by England’s experienced pair Ben Lane and Sean Vendy, losing 13-21, 17-21. Youngsters Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King also exited after a straight-game defeat to India’s world No.1 duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, while veterans Nur Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong fell to Korea’s formidable combination of Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae.
In women’s doubles, national hopes Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan endured a painful exit after a closely contested loss to Indonesia’s Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari. The Malaysians fought bravely but ultimately succumbed 24-26, 17-21, with the narrow first-game loss proving costly.
Malaysia experienced contrasting outcomes in the mixed doubles. Eighth seeds Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie were knocked out by rising Americans Presley Smith and Jennie Gai, suffering a straight-game defeat 9-21, 17-21.
On a brighter note, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei progressed to the quarter-finals after overcoming compatriots Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin 21-13, 23-21, ensuring Malaysian representation remains intact in the discipline.
As the tournament moves into the quarter-final stage, Malaysia’s hopes now rest heavily on their men’s doubles contingent, with Aaron–Soh and Man–Tee carrying the nation’s expectations in front of the home crowd.
