Iraq national team has written a historic new chapter after defeating Bolivia national team 2-1 in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament, sealing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Iraq struck first thanks to a well-executed set piece orchestrated by Amir Al Ammari. His powerful free-kick forced a brilliant save from Bolivia goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra, resulting in a corner. From the ensuing delivery, Ali Al-Hamadi rose highest to head home and give Iraq an early lead.
The 24-year-old striker, who had been a fitness doubt before the match, calmly guided the ball past Viscarra to settle Iraqi nerves.
Despite Iraq’s bright start, Bolivia responded and found an equalizer midway through the contest.
Moises Paniagua reacted quickly to control a deflected attempt from Ramiro Vaca before spinning and firing past Iraq goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.
Bolivia pushed forward, with Miguel Terceros testing Basil with a looping effort that the Iraqi keeper tipped over the bar late in the first half.
Iraq suffered a setback early in the second half when Youssef Amyn was forced off through injury.
However, his replacement Marko Farji, made an immediate impact. Just 60 seconds after entering the match, Farji raced onto a long pass from Zaid Tahseen and squared the ball for Aymen Hussein.
The striker calmly finished from close range to restore Iraq’s lead. Iraq later had chances to extend their advantage through Mohanad Ali, but their disciplined defense ensured Bolivia could not break through again.
The final whistle sparked celebrations across Iraq, ending a qualification journey that spanned nine unsuccessful campaigns and 21 matches on the road to North America.
Under head coach Graham Arnold, Iraq has now secured the 48th and final berth for the 2026 tournament and first World Cup appearance since the 1986 FIFA World Cup, ending a 40-year absence from football’s biggest stage.
At the World Cup, Iraq will compete in Group I alongside France, Senegal, and Norway.
