France’s national team, did even not score in the normal but more accurately and winning Portugal’s national team in the penalty shoot-out scoring 5-3 after tied in 120 minutes 2-2 in the UEFA EURO 2024 quarter-final at Volkspark Stadion, Hamburg.
Throughout the match, both teams struggled to find the back of the net during regular and extra time, despite creating multiple opportunities. Portugal’s star players, Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha, saw their efforts brilliantly saved by France’s goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.
Ranked 4th in the world, Portugal continued to press hard, with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the attack, but they were unable to secure a victory in open play.
The deadlock forced the match into a penalty shoot-out. Portugal’s hopes were dashed when Joao Felix’s shot hit the post, despite successful conversions from Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva.
France capitalized on Portugal’s misstep, with Theo Hernandez netting the decisive penalty, propelling Les Bleus into the semi-finals.
France will now face Spain in the semi-finals on July 10, after Spain recorded a dramatic 2-1 victory over hosts Germany.
