Formula 1’s long-awaited return to Malaysia is thanks to strong royal diplomacy, with close ties between His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain helping secure the historic agreement.
The arrangement will see the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix staged at the Sepang International Circuit in October 2026, marking Formula 1’s return to Malaysian soil for the first time since 2017.
The successful agreement is rooted in the strong personal friendship forged between Sultan Ibrahim and King Hamad since 2017.
Their relationship has steadily evolved into a broader diplomatic partnership between Malaysia and Bahrain, strengthened further during Sultan Ibrahim’s State Visit to Bahrain in 2025.
That close bond proved crucial when Formula 1 was forced to seek an alternative solution after the Bahrain Grand Prix faced uncertainty due to the ongoing armed conflict in West Asia, threatening its place on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
As Formula 1 searched for a viable solution to preserve one of its scheduled Grands Prix, King Hamad personally contacted Sultan Ibrahim to discuss possible alternatives.
The discussions, conducted in a spirit of friendship and mutual trust, laid the foundation for a strategic collaboration involving the Government of Malaysia, the Government of Bahrain, Formula 1, and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
The result was a historic agreement allowing Malaysia to host the Bahrain Grand Prix at Petronas Sepang International Circuit, ensuring the race remained on the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship calendar.
The decision marks one of the biggest moments in Malaysian motorsport history in recent years.
Sepang, widely regarded as one of Formula 1’s most popular modern circuits, last hosted a World Championship race in 2017 before disappearing from the calendar.
Now, nearly a decade later, the iconic venue is set to welcome Formula 1 back as part of an unprecedented international collaboration.
The announcement has been warmly welcomed by Formula 1 fans across Malaysia and Southeast Asia, many of whom have long hoped to see the championship return to Sepang.
Beyond motorsport, the agreement stands as a powerful example of how royal diplomacy and international cooperation can deliver major global sporting events, strengthening bilateral ties while placing Malaysia back in the international sporting spotlight.
As anticipation builds toward October 2026, Sepang is once again preparing to become the centre of the Formula 1 world—this time through a historic partnership born from friendship, diplomacy and shared commitment between two nations.
