Formula 1 has officially confirmed a sensational return to Sepang International Circuit, with Malaysia set to host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from 2–4 October 2026, replacing the originally scheduled Bahrain venue while preserving the championship calendar amid ongoing geopolitical challenges in the Middle East.

The race, which will take place between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix, remains subject to final contractual agreements and formal approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. It will officially be staged as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, marking one of the most extraordinary venue changes in modern Formula 1 history.

The landmark agreement was reached between Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain, and the Government of Malaysia, ensuring that the Bahrain Grand Prix remains on the 2026 calendar despite regional instability. Formula 1 also confirmed that the remainder of the 2026 schedule will remain unchanged.

For Malaysian motorsport fans, the announcement represents a dream comeback. Sepang last hosted Formula 1 in 2017, ending an 18-year run after debuting on the calendar in 1999. Since then, the circuit has remained one of the world’s premier motorsport venues, regularly staging MotoGP and major international racing events.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali described the agreement as another example of Formula 1’s ability to overcome challenges while delivering for fans around the world.

“We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026,” said Domenicali.

“Once again, the sport has demonstrated its ability to adapt, find solutions, and deliver, creating an exciting moment for everyone who follows Formula 1.”

Domenicali also paid tribute to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Malaysia, and both governments for making the unprecedented arrangement possible.

Calling Sepang “a great venue” with “a special place in Formula 1 history,” he added that its return would provide “a spectacular setting for racing and an unforgettable experience for fans.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem praised the collaboration between all parties, stressing that safety remained the highest priority throughout the decision-making process.

He highlighted Malaysia’s longstanding relationship with Formula 1 and credited the Motorsports Association of Malaysia and the Malaysian Government for helping facilitate the championship’s return.

“The return of the Championship to Sepang is testament to our close relationship with Malaysia and the strength of international cooperation within our sport,” Ben Sulayem said.

Bahrain Crown Prince and Prime Minister His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa said the agreement reflects Bahrain’s unwavering commitment to Formula 1 despite ongoing regional challenges.

“Amid ongoing regional challenges, Bahrain is proud to stand as a pillar of stability for Formula 1, and we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure a successful and memorable race for everyone involved.”

He thanked Formula 1, the FIA, Bahrain International Circuit, Sepang International Circuit, and all participating teams for supporting the initiative.

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the event as more than just a motorsport spectacle, calling it a symbol of the close friendship between Malaysia and Bahrain.

“We are honoured to support the Kingdom of Bahrain, Formula 1 and the FIA in hosting the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit.”

“This collaboration reflects the enduring friendship, mutual trust and close partnership between Malaysia and the Kingdom of Bahrain, while reaffirming Malaysia’s readiness and capability to host major international events.”

Anwar also pledged that Malaysia is fully prepared to welcome Formula 1 teams, officials and fans back to Sepang, showcasing the country’s world-class infrastructure and renowned hospitality.

The announcement marks one of the biggest motorsport stories of 2026. Nearly a decade after Formula 1 disappeared from Malaysia, Sepang is back on the calendar under extraordinary circumstances, ensuring fans will once again witness Grand Prix racing at one of the sport’s most iconic and demanding circuits.

With ticket information set to be released soon, Formula 1’s long-awaited return to Malaysia promises to become one of the defining highlights of the 2026 season—bringing the roar of Grand Prix racing back to Sepang while preserving Bahrain’s place in the championship through an unprecedented international partnership.
