Malaysia head coach Tan Cheng Hoe praised his players’ resilience after Harimau Malaya came from behind to defeat Myanmar 2-1 in their opening ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 Group B clash, while also paying tribute to the hosts for pushing his side throughout an intense encounter.
Malaysia recovered from an early setback to secure all three points thanks to a second-half brace from Paulo Josué, who was named Man of the Match after inspiring the comeback.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Tan admitted his players are still adapting to his methods after only a short period together but was delighted with the character they showed.
“We worked very hard to get back into the game. As a coach, I’m very happy, and I hope the players can keep focusing on the next match and continue improving.”
“I’m proud of the boys. After only about 10 days together, it’s not easy for the players to fully understand everything the coaching staff wants.”
Tan acknowledged Malaysia’s difficult start, admitting Myanmar’s opening goal was a result of the hosts’ dangerous attacking qualities rather than tactical failure.
“The goal we conceded wasn’t planned, but we knew Myanmar are very dangerous on the counter-attack and have quick players.”
“The important thing is that we managed to respond in the second half. Overall, I think we produced a good performance.”
Despite the victory, Tan reserved special praise for Myanmar, describing the home side as one of the toughest opponents Malaysia have faced recently.
According to the Malaysian coach, Myanmar’s aggressive style and relentless commitment made life extremely difficult for Harimau Malaya.
“Myanmar are a very strong team physically. Their players are highly motivated and committed in every moment of the match.”
“They play with great intensity and made things very difficult for us. We knew before the game it would not be easy.”
Tan added that his players had to remain disciplined throughout the contest to cope with Myanmar’s physical approach and energetic pressing.
Man of the Match Paulo Josué, whose two second-half goals turned the match around, echoed his coach’s satisfaction after Malaysia opened the tournament with maximum points.
The experienced midfielder emphasised that the team’s collective effort was more important than his individual performance.
Malaysia now shift their focus to their second Group B fixture against Laos, knowing another victory would place them in a commanding position in the race for the knockout stage.
After overcoming one of the tournament’s most difficult away assignments, Harimau Malaya have not only secured three valuable points but also demonstrated the fighting spirit Tan Cheng Hoe hopes will define Malaysia’s ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 campaign.
