Malaysia’s Speedy Tigers were handed a difficult start to their 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup campaign after suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to defending champions Germany in their opening Group B match in Belgium on Sunday.
Germany immediately demonstrated why they remain one of the tournament’s leading contenders, scoring three goals inside the opening eight minutes to take complete control of the contest.
Malaysia managed to fight back after the interval, with Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal converting a penalty corner to reduce the deficit to 1-3.
However, Germany quickly restored their authority, adding two more goals to secure a convincing victory and leave Malaysia with plenty to reflect on ahead of their second group match.
The defending champions needed just four minutes to break the deadlock.
Jakob Brilla converted a penalty corner in the fourth minute to put Germany ahead.
Barely a minute later, Germany doubled their advantage.
Christopher Ruhr found the back of the net in the fifth minute as the Germans continued to overwhelm the Malaysian defence.
The nightmare start became even worse in the eighth minute when Justus Weigand scored Germany’s third.
In the space of just eight minutes, Malaysia found themselves 0-3 down against the reigning world champions.
The Speedy Tigers struggled to establish their rhythm as Germany’s high-intensity approach and attacking pressure continued to create problems.
Malaysia returned from half-time with renewed determination and showed a much-improved performance in the third quarter.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 40th minute.
Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal stepped up during a penalty-corner opportunity and produced the finish Malaysia needed.
The goal gave the Speedy Tigers renewed belief and briefly raised hopes of an unlikely comeback.
Malaysia began to apply greater pressure, but Germany’s experience and quality eventually proved decisive.
Just five minutes after Malaysia’s goal, Germany restored their three-goal cushion.
Justus Warweg struck in the 45th minute to make it 4-1.
The goal dealt a major blow to Malaysia’s momentum.
Germany then delivered the final blow in the 53rd minute when Paul-Philipp Kaufmann found the net to complete the defending champions’ 5-1 victory.
Malaysia were unable to find another response during the closing stages.
The defeat leaves Malaysia with no time to dwell on their disappointing opening result.
Head coach Brendon Carolan and his players must immediately shift their attention towards their second Group B fixture against France on Monday.
