Singapore’s Lions suffered a 3-1 defeat to four-time ASEAN Championship winners Thailand in the first leg of the ASEAN Championship Hyundai Cup 2026 semi-final at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday, 15 August.
Despite the setback, Singapore showed plenty of fight in front of their home supporters, with Ilhan Fandi scoring late in the second half to give the Lions a valuable lifeline ahead of Tuesday’s decisive return leg in Bangkok.
Thailand’s superior quality ultimately proved decisive, with Teerasak Poeiphimai scoring twice before Seksan Ratree added a third to put the War Elephants in control of the tie.
However, Singapore head coach Gavin Lee insisted the semi-final is far from over.
The Lions entered the first leg knowing they faced one of the strongest teams remaining in the competition.
Thailand’s attacking quality eventually exposed several lapses in concentration from the Singapore defence, allowing the visitors to establish a commanding advantage.
Lee admitted afterwards that his side had made life unnecessarily difficult for themselves.
“Thailand always has quality, but we will hold our hands up and say we put ourselves in a few unnecessarily difficult moments, and when you have players of that quality, you will be punished.”
The Singapore coach, however, refused to blame his players for the result and instead highlighted the importance of learning from the experience.
For Singapore, this is the first major setback of their impressive ASEAN Championship campaign.
With Thailand leading 3-0, Singapore needed something to take into the second leg.
That moment arrived late in the match when Ilhan Fandi found the breakthrough.
The striker’s goal reduced the deficit to 3-1, giving Singapore a crucial reason to believe ahead of the trip to Bangkok.
Ilhan has been one of Singapore’s most important attacking players throughout the tournament, and his latest goal once again demonstrated his ability to deliver when his team needs him most.
The goal may ultimately prove hugely significant if Singapore can produce a remarkable comeback in the second leg.
Despite the disappointment, Lee was particularly proud of the supporters at Jalan Besar Stadium.
The Singapore fans continued to back their team until the final whistle, even with the Lions facing a three-goal deficit.
Lee believes that support must now become the team’s source of motivation.
“We were disappointed that we couldn’t deliver the performance the fans wanted, but they were amazing and pushed us right until the end.”
The coach revealed that the message inside the dressing room was clear.
“If the fans didn’t give up on us, we cannot give up on ourselves.”
For Lee, that mentality will be essential if Singapore are to have any chance of turning the tie around.
The 35-year-old coach acknowledged that Singapore now face a huge challenge in Bangkok.
But he believes the most important battle is psychological.
“The most important thing is the manner in which we leave the stadium tonight. If we leave thinking it’s over, then no matter what tactics we want to put out there, there’s no chance.”
Lee said he saw enough determination among his players to believe that they can respond.
“I could see the determination in the players’ faces and their desire to right the wrongs.”
That belief could be crucial. Singapore now needs to recover physically and mentally before returning to action on Tuesday.
The Lions will travel to Thailand carrying a 3-1 aggregate deficit, meaning they need to score at least twice without conceding if they are to overturn the tie over 90 minutes.
It is a difficult task against a Thailand side that has shown its quality throughout the tournament.
But Lee insists Singapore will not surrender.
“Coming into this journey, we knew there would be bumps along the road, and this is the first one we have faced. Now, the question is: how do we overcome this bump?”
The Singapore coach believes his players will respond with everything they have.
“Knowing the boys, they will want to recover as well as they can for Tuesday.”
“We are disappointed and hurt, but we will find a way to close the gap and put in a better performance on Tuesday.”
