Jordan’s FIFA World Cup 2026 journey came to an end after suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Algeria in their second Group J match at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, officially ending the Nashama’s hopes of reaching the Round of 32.
The result, combined with Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria earlier in the day, confirmed Jordan’s elimination after consecutive defeats in the group stage.
Argentina secured the first qualification spot from Group J with a perfect six points, while Algeria and Austria remain level on three points each heading into a decisive final round. Jordan remains at the bottom of the standings without a point after losses to Austria (3-1) and Algeria.
Jordan produced an energetic start and nearly opened the scoring inside the opening minute when Nizar Al Rashdan headed narrowly wide from a dangerous cross.
Algeria quickly responded through Amine Gouiri, whose early effort drifted just past the post as both sides settled into an entertaining contest.
The Desert Foxes gradually assumed control of possession and created several promising opportunities, with Farès Chaïbi testing goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila, while Gouiri also threatened from distance.
Jordan, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack through Mousa Al Tamari and Ali Olwan. Al Tamari nearly broke the deadlock with a powerful long-range strike, only for goalkeeper Luca Zidane to produce an excellent save.
Despite Algeria enjoying the majority of possession, it was Jordan who found the breakthrough.
In the 36th minute, Al Tamari led a rapid counterattack before delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area for Nizar Al Rashdan, who calmly slotted a right-footed finish into the bottom corner to give Jordan a surprise 1-0 lead.
Jordan defended resolutely for the remainder of the first half, frustrating Algeria and taking their advantage into the interval.
Algeria emerged from the dressing room with renewed urgency. Head coach Djamel Belmadi made two attacking substitutions at halftime, introducing Nabil Bentaleb and Nadhir Ben Bouali, a move that immediately increased the pressure on Jordan’s defence.
Goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila produced a series of outstanding saves, denying efforts from Ibrahim Maza and Ben Bouali while keeping Jordan in front.
At the other end, Jordan continued to threaten on the break, with Noor Al Rawabdeh and Mahmoud Al Mardi both coming close to extending the lead.
However, Algeria’s relentless pressure eventually paid off. In the 69th minute, Nadhir Ben Bouali rose highest to head home Riyad Mahrez’s corner, bringing the Desert Foxes level at 1-1.
The equaliser shifted the momentum completely in Algeria’s favour. Just thirteen minutes later, Amine Gouiri capitalised on defensive confusion following another corner kick, reacting quickest inside the six-yard box to score the winning goal in the 82nd minute.
Jordan pushed forward during seven minutes of added time in search of an equaliser, but Algeria held firm, while Abulaila continued to impress with several late saves to keep the scoreline respectable.
The defeat officially ends Jordan’s World Cup campaign after two consecutive losses.
Although the Nashama showed resilience and organisation for long periods, they were ultimately unable to withstand Algeria’s sustained second-half pressure.
Jordan will now conclude its tournament against already-qualified Argentina in the final group-stage match, while Algeria and Austria face off in a winner-takes-all showdown for the remaining Round of 32 qualification spot.
For Algeria, the comeback victory keeps their World Cup hopes alive, while Jordan exits the tournament with valuable experience despite an early elimination from football’s biggest stage.
