FIFA World Cup 2026 Group Stage, Group I between France and Iraq could face significant disruption after severe thunderstorms were forecast to hit Philadelphia during Monday’s match at Lincoln Financial Field.
With kickoff scheduled for 5:00 pm local time (5:00 am Malaysian time), weather forecasts predict dangerous storm conditions throughout the afternoon, raising the possibility of delays, temporary suspensions, or even a postponed kickoff.
A weather alert has been issued across the Philadelphia region as meteorologists warn of potentially severe thunderstorms expected to develop between 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm local time, covering virtually the entire duration of the match.
According to local forecasts, the storms could bring Destructive wind gusts, Frequent lightning, Torrential rainfall, the possibility of isolated tornadoes, and flash flooding in parts of the city.
The adverse conditions are also expected to affect road traffic, public transportation, and flights throughout the Philadelphia area.
Authorities have also warned that outdoor events, including the FIFA World Cup fixture and fan activities around Lincoln Financial Field, could be delayed or suspended if conditions deteriorate.
Under United States federal safety regulations, sporting events must immediately stop if lightning is detected within approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) of the stadium.
Once lightning is recorded, a mandatory 30-minute suspension is enforced before play can resume.
If another lightning strike occurs during that waiting period, the 30-minute countdown resets, potentially leading to lengthy interruptions.
The protocol has already impacted major international football tournaments in the United States.
During the FIFA Club World Cup last year, six matches experienced weather-related stoppages, including the Round of 16 clash between Chelsea and Benfica, which lasted an extraordinary four hours and 38 minutes due to repeated lightning delays.
