It was a day that will forever be etched into the history of Aprilia and Italian motorsport as hometown hero Marco Bezzecchi produced a masterclass performance to win the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, leading teammate Jorge Martin to a sensational Aprilia one-two finish in front of a record-breaking crowd.
The unforgettable result marked one of the greatest moments in Aprilia Racing’s MotoGP journey, with Bezzecchi claiming victory on home soil aboard Italian machinery while extending his lead in the championship standings.
Behind the dominant Aprilia duo, Francesco Bagnaia delivered a courageous defensive ride to secure third place for Ducati after surviving an intense last-lap attack from rising Japanese star Ai Ogura.
The race began with pole-sitter Bezzecchi making a strong launch, but it was Martin who emerged from Turn 1 with the lead after Sprint winner Raul Fernandez ran wide and dropped dramatically down the order.
Bezzecchi quickly responded, reclaiming the lead before fellow Italian Bagnaia entered the fight. The Ducati star wasted little time moving into second position and by Lap 3 had seized control of the race, overtaking Bezzecchi at San Donato to ignite the Mugello crowd.
For several laps, Bagnaia appeared poised to secure a fourth consecutive Mugello victory. However, the championship leader remained glued to the Ducati’s rear wheel, patiently waiting for his opportunity.
The decisive moment arrived with ten laps remaining. Bezzecchi launched a perfectly executed move into Turn 1 and immediately began pulling away. The pace was relentless, and within a single lap the Aprilia rider had opened a sizeable gap over Bagnaia.
As the Ducati rider struggled to match Bezzecchi’s rhythm, Martin sensed his opportunity. The Spaniard overtook Bagnaia on Lap 16 to complete an Aprilia one-two and begin chasing his teammate.
Despite reducing the gap at stages, Martin could not find enough speed to challenge for victory as Bezzecchi remained untouchable at the front.
With every passing lap, the dream scenario for Aprilia became increasingly real.
While the battle for victory was effectively settled, the fight for the final podium position delivered breathtaking drama.
Starting from 13th on the grid, Ogura once again showcased his remarkable race pace. The Trackhouse rookie sliced through the field and soon found himself battling with Bagnaia for third place.
The Japanese rider overtook several established stars, including fierce duels with Pedro Acosta and Marc Marquez, before closing rapidly on the struggling Ducati rider in the final laps.
As the race entered its final corner, Ogura launched an aggressive attack at Bucine and briefly appeared poised to snatch a maiden MotoGP podium.
But Bagnaia responded instantly.
Using Ducati’s acceleration and years of experience around Mugello, the Italian executed a brilliant cutback and edged Ogura in a drag race to the finish line by a mere 0.034 seconds.
The photo finish sparked another roar from the grandstands as Bagnaia preserved a hard-earned podium.
At the front, however, there was no denying Bezzecchi. The Italian crossed the finish line to celebrate arguably the greatest victory of his MotoGP career — winning his home Grand Prix in front of passionate Italian fans while delivering Aprilia a historic one-two finish at Mugello.
