It was a day of seismic shifts and bittersweet victories for the Malaysian camp at the YONEX German Open 2026 Round of 16. While a few familiar faces secured their quarter-final spots, the tournament bid a shocking farewell to the world’s top-ranked pair in a night that left fans stunned.
In what can only be described as the upset of the tournament, world number one seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik [1] have been sensationally knocked out. Facing the unseeded French pair Julien Maio and William Villeger, the Malaysians struggled to find their usual rhythm. After dropping the first set 15-21, the top seeds fought valiantly in a heart-stopping second set but eventually succumbed 22-24, ending their title hopes prematurely.
The much-anticipated all-Malaysian showdown on Court 1 saw Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin [3] face off against veteran compatriots Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi. In a high-stakes battle for national supremacy, the third seeds proved too clinical, maintaining control throughout the match to win 21-18, 21-14. While the victory keeps Sze Fei and Izzuddin’s momentum alive, it signals the end of the road for the “independent” duo Yew Sin and Ee Yi.
The bright spark of the day undoubtedly came from Wong Ling Ching in the Women’s Singles. Defying the odds, she produced a masterclass performance to dismantle Thailand’s 3rd seed, Pornpawee Chochuwong, in straight sets 21-14, 21-19. Her tactical discipline and grit have officially made her the “dark horse” of the competition.
In the Mixed Doubles (XD), Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai [5] continued their march with a business-like 21-18, 21-11 victory over Sweden’s Karlborg and Sjoo. However, the pair of Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing saw their journey end at the hands of Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.
Meanwhile, in a grueling three-set Men’s Doubles affair, Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King [8] pushed Chinese Taipei’s Lee brothers to the brink but eventually fell 19-21, 21-8, 18-21.
