Former Netherlands international and Valencia forward Patrick Kluivert is on the verge of being appointed as the head coach of Indonesia’s national football team.
The 48-year-old is reportedly in advanced discussions with the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) to replace Shin Tae-yong, whose tenure was brought to an end earlier this week.
Kluivert’s agent confirmed the ongoing negotiations, stating, “We are in discussions, but nothing has been signed yet,” to Dutch media outlet NOS. If finalized, Kluivert would take on the role until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Shin Tae-yong, who took charge in early 2020, led the Indonesian team in 57 matches, amassing a record of 26 wins, 14 draws, and 17 losses. While his time with the team included notable achievements, PSSI President Erick Thohir emphasized the need for a change in leadership to better align with the national team’s long-term goals.
“We see the need for a leader who can better implement our strategies, communicate effectively with the players, and enhance the national team’s programs,” Thohir said during a press conference.
According to Thohir, three candidates were shortlisted for the role, with Kluivert emerging as a frontrunner despite his relatively limited head coaching experience. Kluivert has held managerial roles as an assistant coach for the Netherlands and head of youth development for Paris Saint-Germain, but this would mark his first role as head coach of a national team.
Kluivert’s appointment would bring a fresh perspective to the team, with hopes of elevating their performance as they aim to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. Indonesia currently sits third in Group C of the Asian World Cup Qualifiers, keeping their qualification hopes alive.
