Croatia national football team defeated Ghana national football team 2-1 in a dramatic Group L decider, securing qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 as group runners-up.
The victory once again showcased Croatia’s tournament pedigree, with the 2018 finalists and 2022 semi-finalists relying on their experienced core to overcome a spirited Ghana side in Philadelphia.
Head coach Zlatko Dalić instructed his side to dictate possession from the opening whistle, with Modrić and Mateo Kovačić controlling the tempo in midfield.
Croatia’s patient build-up play forced Ghana deep into their own half, while the African side relied primarily on quick counter-attacks led by Antoine Semenyo. However, Croatia’s defence, marshalled superbly by Joško Gvardiol, remained composed throughout the opening stages.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 31st minute. Kovačić threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Petar Sučić, who unleashed a powerful low strike from outside the penalty area. Although goalkeeper Benjamin Asare managed to get a hand to the effort, the ball nestled into the bottom corner to hand Croatia a deserved 1-0 advantage.
Needing a positive result to keep their hopes alive, Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz made an important tactical adjustment early in the second half by introducing fresh attacking options.
The change transformed the Black Stars, who began pressing Croatia aggressively and forcing them onto the back foot.
Their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute. Following an excellent free-kick delivery from Ernest Nuamah, Derrick Luckassen bundled the ball into the net from close range.
The assistant referee initially raised the offside flag, but after a lengthy four-minute VAR review, the goal was awarded, sparking wild celebrations among Ghana’s supporters as the score was levelled at 1-1.
With qualification hanging in the balance, Croatia’s captain once again demonstrated why he remains one of football’s greatest midfielders.
In the 83rd minute, Modrić floated a trademark corner into the heart of the penalty area where Nikola Vlašić rose highest to power a header into the net, restoring Croatia’s lead.
The assist carried added significance, as Modrić became the oldest player in FIFA World Cup history to register an assist, adding another remarkable milestone to his legendary international career.
Ghana pushed desperately for another equaliser during the closing minutes, but Croatia’s disciplined defensive display denied opportunities for Fatawu Issahaku and his teammates.
The 2-1 victory secures Croatia second place in Group L behind England national football team, officially booking their place in the knockout stage.
For Ghana, the defeat leaves their World Cup future hanging in the balance. The Black Stars must now wait for results from the remaining groups to determine whether they can progress as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
