Malaysia’s preparations for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026 have suffered a major setback after rising star Syahir Iqbal Khan was officially ruled out due to a serious injury.
The unfortunate news was confirmed by national futsal head coach Addie Azwan Zainal, who revealed that Syahir has sustained a Tier 1 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, forcing him to miss the continental showpiece scheduled to take place in Jakarta, Indonesia from January 27 to February 7, 2026.
“Syahir has suffered a Tier 1 ACL injury and it will take some time before he can fully recover,” Addie said in comments shared with Astro Arena journalist Fadhirul Shuhaimi.
“His absence will have a big impact on the team. Losing him inevitably disrupts our overall planning and progress.”
Syahir’s withdrawal is a significant blow for Malaysia, with the young attacker widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in the current national setup. His energy, creativity and goal threat had been central to Addie’s plans heading into the Asian Cup.
Malaysia last qualified for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup in 2018, while their best-ever achievement came in 2005, when the national team advanced to the knockout stage in Vietnam.
The upcoming tournament in Jakarta will mark Malaysia’s 13th appearance in Asia’s premier futsal competition, as the squad looks to end a long wait for a deep run on the continental stage.
With the countdown to kick-off already underway, Addie now faces the challenge of reshaping his squad without one of its key attacking weapons — a test of depth, resilience and adaptability as Malaysia aim to compete with Asia’s elite once again.
