Malaysia produced a spirited comeback to edge Canada 3–2 in a dramatic second match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2026 Round-Robin at Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Stadium, Ipoh.
The win comes a day after their 2–2 draw against New Zealand, keeping the Speedy Tigers firmly in the hunt in this year’s competition.
This match originally set for 8 PM, only kicked off at 10:08 PM once the pitch was deemed playable.
Malaysia began with real intent, blasting into the lead in just the 4th minute through Akhimullah Anuar, who finished off a slick attacking move to the delight of the home supporters.
But Canada responded swiftly. Sean Davis levelled the score eight minutes later, capitalising on a defensive lapse.
The Red Caribou struck again in the 16th minute, this time via a well-executed penalty corner finished by Matthew Sarmento, handing the visitors a 2–1 advantage.
Just three minutes later, Abu Kamal Azrai restored parity with a brilliant field goal in the 19th minute, setting the stage for a heated contest.
National star Faizal Saari proved yet again why he remains Malaysia’s most feared forward.
In the 24th minute, Faizal stepped up for a penalty corner and buried the ball with trademark precision, giving Malaysia a 3–2 lead that would ultimately decide the game.
Both teams pushed aggressively for more goals, but the Speedy Tigers’ defence held firm until the final whistle.
Result of another match, New Zealand 3–1 South Korea and Belgium vs India will resume Tuesday morning due to heavy raining.
