Kuala Lumpur City FC players can finally breathe easier as the club takes significant steps to resolve its long-standing salary arrears.
The President of the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA), Syed Yazid Syed Omar, confirmed in a recent statement that the club has begun paying off its debts, fulfilling his promise to address the financial crisis after his election as KLFA President.
In a move that marks the first phase of resolving the issue, KL City FC players have already received a month’s salary, along with partial contributions to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and SOCSO. This is part of Syed Yazid’s commitment to clearing the arrears that have burdened the club and its staff.
“My priority is to settle the arrears, especially those involving the salaries of players, staff, and contributions to EPF and SOCSO. We have already started paying one month’s salary to the players along with part of the EPF and SOCSO contributions,” Syed Yazid stated.
In addition to the initial payments, Syed Yazid revealed that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has pledged RM1 million in funds, expected to be delivered by the end of October. This financial support will further help in reducing the club’s arrears, but Syed Yazid acknowledged that it won’t fully cover the debts.
“While we’re grateful for DBKL’s assistance, the RM1 million won’t be enough to completely settle all arrears. It remains my responsibility, along with the Executive Committee, to find a long-term solution to the financial issues that have plagued the Kuala Lumpur Football Association and KL City FC,” he said.
The new KLFA President, who was recently elected for the 2024-2028 term, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him but also emphasized the gravity of the task at hand. He vowed to work with the Executive Committee to ensure that the financial problems are resolved and that the club operates in a more structured and efficient manner moving forward.
Syed Yazid also noted that KLFA is exploring additional financial solutions, including ongoing discussions with a commercial entity interested in acquiring a 51% stake in KL City FC. This entity has already made a RM1.5 million deposit, which could provide a significant boost to the club’s financial stability.
With these developments, KL City FC players and staff are hopeful for a more secure future, as they prepare to resume their Super League campaign. The next challenge for the team is a match against Kelantan Darul Naim FC (KDN FC) at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, on October 18.
The financial recovery of KL City FC appears to be underway, with initial payments made and further support from DBKL on the horizon. While challenges remain, Syed Yazid and his newly appointed Executive Committee are committed to finding long-term solutions, offering a glimmer of hope for players, staff, and supporters alike.
