Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is awaiting a decision from the Ministry of Finance (MOF) regarding its proposal to extend the hosting contract for the Malaysian MotoGP Grand Prix, which is set to expire next year.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh confirmed that KBS is fully supportive of renewing the prestigious contract and will be submitting a comprehensive report to the MOF to support the case.
“I have met with representatives from Dorna Sports (the commercial rights holder of MotoGP) and conveyed the government’s intention to renew the contract,” said Yeoh.
“However, the Ministry of Finance usually requires detailed data to ensure that the investment in hosting MotoGP not only justifies the cost but also generates strong economic returns for the country.”
Yeoh emphasized the significant economic and employment impact that MotoGP brings to Malaysia each year.
“As we know, hosting MotoGP creates thousands of job opportunities. Last year alone, around 4,000 individuals benefited directly from the event. This year, ticket sales exceeded 90% capacity, with a notable increase in foreign ticket purchases, showing the event’s growing international appeal,” she added.
The Minister was speaking to reporters following a working visit to review the Raja Muda Sports Complex Upgrade Project in Kampung Baru — part of the Malaysian Sepaktakraw Academy Development Initiative.
Earlier, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) Chief Executive Officer Azhan Shariman Hanif confirmed that negotiations with Dorna Sports are in the final stages regarding the new hosting term.
He noted that specific details — whether the renewal will be for five consecutive years or under a 3+2 contract format — will only be disclosed after receiving official government approval.
The recently concluded 2025 Malaysian MotoGP Grand Prix, held last weekend at the Sepang International Circuit, attracted an impressive 190,977 spectators over three days — a testament to the event’s enduring popularity among local and international fans.
Renewing the MotoGP Malaysia contract would ensure the nation’s place on the world motorsport calendar while continuing to fuel tourism, job creation, and Malaysia’s international sporting reputation.
