The debate over financial sustainability in Malaysian football has intensified after Luis Garcia, Chief Executive Officer of Johor Darul Ta’zim, responded to a recent statement made by Dr. Johan Kamal Hamidon, CEO of Selangor FC, regarding solutions to the financial challenges facing the Liga Super Malaysia.
Garcia expressed a strong interest in the proposal and suggested that a round table discussion involving all Malaysian league clubs should be organised to thoroughly examine the ideas presented by Selangor’s top executive.
In a statement, Garcia welcomed the initiative but stressed the importance of open dialogue among all stakeholders.
“I’m intrigued with the recent statement by the Selangor FC chief executive officer Dr. Johan Kamal that he has solutions for the financial problems in the Malaysian League. I believe we must have this round table discussion with all the teams because we need to know what his idea of a solution is.”
The former international footballer added that collaboration across clubs is essential to address the structural and financial issues that continue to challenge Malaysian football.
Garcia also highlighted Dr. Johan’s experience in football administration and expressed eagerness to hear his proposals.
“I’m honoured to have played at the highest level in addition to working with world-class organisations, and I am really eager to find out what solutions Dr. Johan has considering his vast experience and knowledge in Malaysian and international football.”
The JDT executive further stated that he hopes the discussions involving all teams can take place in the near future, allowing clubs to collectively explore sustainable strategies for the league’s long-term stability.
Financial management has been a recurring topic in Malaysian football, with several clubs facing budget constraints and operational challenges in recent seasons. The potential dialogue between Johor Darul Ta’zim and Selangor FC leadership could open the door for broader reforms across the domestic league.
