Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Dr Ahmad Donyamali, has praised the performances of the national football team at the FIFA World Cup 2026 while accusing the tournament’s host nation of failing to provide equal conditions for all participating teams.
Speaking after Iran’s World Cup campaign came to an end, Donyamali insisted Team Melli delivered performances worthy of the nation’s pride despite the challenges they faced throughout the tournament.
The minister claimed the host government did not fully honour its legal commitments to ensure fair and equal conditions for every competing nation.
According to Donyamali, the situation has sparked widespread concern, with multiple legal complaints now reportedly being pursued against both the host nation and FIFA.
“Unfortunately, the host government did not properly fulfil its legal obligations and failed to provide equal and fair conditions for all the teams participating in the competition.”
“This has led to widespread protests, and several complaints are currently being pursued against both the host government and FIFA.”
While the minister did not specify the nature of the alleged shortcomings, his comments represent one of the strongest official criticisms directed at the tournament organisers since the conclusion of Iran’s campaign.
Despite the disappointment of elimination, Donyamali reserved high praise for Iran’s players, applauding their commitment and resilience throughout the tournament.
He said the squad had exceeded expectations under difficult circumstances and noted that public support reflected widespread appreciation for their efforts.
“Our national team players were truly outstanding. Despite all the difficulties they endured, they showed tremendous determination and made extraordinary efforts.”
“Fortunately, the positive reaction from the public demonstrated that the team’s performances were appreciated and admired by the people.”
Iran’s displays during the World Cup earned praise from supporters for their fighting spirit, even though they ultimately fell short of progressing further in the competition.
Looking ahead, the Sports Minister stressed that attention has now turned towards preparing the national team for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, where Iran will aim to convert the lessons learned at the World Cup into continental success.
“Our focus now is to prepare the national team as well as possible for the AFC Asian Cup.”
“We hope our players will be rewarded for all the hard work and sacrifices they made during the World Cup by achieving success in the Asian Cup.”
While questions surrounding the alleged organisational issues may continue beyond the World Cup, Iran’s immediate priority is rebuilding momentum for Asia’s premier international tournament.
