Indonesian National Team has unveiled its 22-player squad for the upcoming ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, set to take place from December 8, 2024, to January 5, 2025.
In Group B, Indonesia will face formidable opponents, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.
The squad, led by head coach Shin Tae-yong, is a blend of seasoned internationals and promising young talents, with the surprise inclusion of Armando Obet Oropa from PSBS Biak. The 21-year-old midfielder, with only eight Liga 1 appearances this season, joins established stars like Marselino Ferdinan, Asnawi Mangkualam, and Ronaldo Kwateh in what many see as a bold and forward-thinking lineup.
The squad features numerous emerging players from Liga 1, including three rising stars from Persib Bandung: Kakang Rudianto, Robi Darwis, and Ferdiansyah. Bali United also contributed heavily, with Kadek Arel, Rahmat Arjuna, and Made Tito making the cut.
Four overseas-based players are set to bring invaluable experience to the team is Marselino Ferdinan (Oxford United, England), Pratama Arhan (Suwon FC, South Korea), Asnawi Mangkualam (Port FC, Thailand), Ronaldo Kwateh (Muangthong United, Thailand)
Marselino and Arhan, in particular, are pivotal figures, having played key roles for Indonesia in previous campaigns.
Armando Obet Oropa’s call-up has raised eyebrows. Despite limited Liga 1 experience, his work ethic and potential impressed Shin Tae-yong. Born in Serui, Oropa has never represented Indonesia at any level, making his selection a significant moment in his career.
Indonesia will open their campaign against Myanmar on December 9, followed by matches against Laos (December 12), Vietnam (December 15), and the Philippines (December 21). Vietnam, a perennial regional powerhouse, is expected to be Indonesia’s toughest opponent in the group stage.
The squad reflects Shin Tae-yong’s long-term vision for Indonesian football, prioritizing youth development and blending it with experienced players. His ability to adapt strategies and foster team chemistry will be crucial in navigating a competitive Group B.
