In a landmark decision at its council meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, on March 20, FIFA officially approved the launch of a brand-new regional tournament — the FIFA ASEAN Cup, marking a major shift in Southeast Asian football.
The inaugural edition is scheduled to take place during the FIFA international windows in September and October 2026, immediately following the traditional AFF Cup.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup was first proposed at the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in October 2025 and received strong backing from regional stakeholders.
According to FIFA, the competition will feature all Southeast Asian national teams, although the exact format has yet to be confirmed.
Crucially, the tournament will be played during official FIFA match windows — a key distinction from the AFF Cup, which traditionally falls outside FIFA dates.
The timing of the new competition is set to significantly impact team planning across the region.
The AFF Cup is scheduled from July 24 to August 26, 2026 — outside FIFA Days — meaning clubs are not obligated to release players. This has long created challenges for national teams in assembling their strongest squads.
In contrast, the FIFA ASEAN Cup will be played within FIFA windows, ensuring top players are available.
This creates a complex balancing act for national teams, who must now navigate two major tournaments within a short span.
Vietnam enter this new era as the reigning AFF Cup champions, having won the title three times overall. Under head coach Kim Sang-sik, they now face the challenge of defending their crown while also targeting success in the newly established FIFA ASEAN Cup.
Regional rivals Thailand remain the most successful AFF Cup nation with seven titles, followed by Singapore with four.
The introduction of the FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to elevate the competitive standard in Southeast Asia while aligning the region more closely with the global football calendar.
However, it also raises key questions around squad rotation, player fatigue, and prioritization — particularly for teams aiming to compete strongly in both tournaments.
