Indonesia extended their impressive run under head coach John Herdman after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mozambique in an international friendly during the June 2026 FIFA Matchday at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Tuesday night.
Backed by a passionate home crowd in Jakarta, the Garuda squad recorded their second consecutive FIFA Matchday win, with striker Ole Romeny emerging as the match-winner thanks to an early first-half strike.
Herdman made several notable changes to his starting lineup, resting key figures including Emil Audero and Justin Hubner while handing starting roles to Maarten Paes and Calvin Verdonk.
The Canadian tactician also deployed an attacking trio consisting of Marselino Ferdinan, Ragnar Oratmangoen, and Romeny, a combination that immediately troubled the visitors.
Despite not dominating possession, Indonesia looked far more dangerous in transition and were rewarded in the 12th minute. A perfectly weighted through ball from Oratmangoen split the Mozambique defence before Romeny calmly converted, sending the packed Gelora Bung Karno crowd into celebration and giving the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead.
Indonesia continued to threaten throughout the first half, creating multiple opportunities through their fluid attacking movement. The home side registered eight attempts before the interval, with three efforts on target, although they were unable to add to their advantage.
Mozambique struggled to create clear-cut chances against an organised Indonesian defensive structure, allowing the Garuda to take their slender lead into halftime.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Indonesia maintaining control of proceedings and continuing to push forward in search of a second goal.
While the hosts increased their shot count, they lacked the finishing touch required to put the match beyond doubt. Nevertheless, Herdman’s side displayed encouraging attacking patterns and composure in possession.
Substitutes Rayhan Hannan and Sandy Walsh injected additional energy into the contest, helping Indonesia sustain pressure on the Mozambique backline.
However, the African visitors remained disciplined defensively and managed to keep the scoreline respectable despite spending long periods under pressure.
When the final whistle sounded, Indonesia celebrated a deserved 1-0 victory and another clean sheet, further highlighting the progress made under Herdman’s leadership.
The result marks Indonesia’s third clean sheet in four matches since the former Canada coach took charge, underlining the team’s growing defensive stability while maintaining an attacking threat at the other end.
With two victories from the June FIFA Matchday window, confidence is continuing to build within the national team setup as Indonesia look ahead to upcoming regional and international competitions.
