Selangor FC may be mathematically out of the AFC Champions League Two Round of 16 race — but there is zero intention to coast through their final group fixtures.
Interim head coach Christophe Gamel and midfield leader Zach Clough have made it clear: the Red Giants still have everything to fight for — pride, momentum, and above all, the trust of their loyal supporters.
Tonight, Selangor face high-flying Bangkok United at Pathum Thani Stadium, looking to rebound from four consecutive group-stage defeats.
Gamel, navigating the club through a turbulent spell, admitted his squad is entering the clash with several injuries — but insisted he remains fully confident in those available.
“I trust the group that is here. I trust the players and the performance we can produce next.”
While acknowledging Bangkok United’s strength, Gamel said Selangor’s approach is driven by pride and responsibility:
“We know our opponents are strong, but we have nothing to lose. What’s important now is to keep momentum going after our league win at home.”
The Frenchman did not shy away from the frustration felt by parts of the fanbase after recent poor results. But he urged for patience as the club restructures both tactically and mentally.
“Some fans are disappointed, but nothing is built in one day. We’re not playing the same football as before. When you change things, you need time.”
Gamel stressed that effort and commitment will be the pillars of Selangor’s resurgence:
“Our foundation isn’t fully settled yet, but fans can see the effort the players are giving. If you give everything, even without the result, fans understand. We respect them — and they must also respect the club.”
Midfield Zach Clough echoed his coach’s determination, praising the unwavering travelling support of Selangor fans across ASEAN.
“The fans were great last weekend. They travel everywhere to support us.”
Clough reinforced that every match remains meaningful, even with qualification out of reach:
“We don’t want to lose. Representing Selangor means fighting for the badge.”
He emphasised the players’ responsibility to reward fans who invest their time, passion, and money into the team:
“We have to repay the fans. We’ll keep fighting, keep working together — and hopefully build momentum for the rest of the season.”
