One of badminton’s fiercest competitors and most inspiring champions, Carolina Marín, has officially announced her retirement from professional badminton—bringing the curtain down on a glittering career defined by resilience, dominance, and historic achievements.
The Olympic gold medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics and three-time world champion confirmed the difficult decision through an emotional video shared on her Instagram, citing ongoing struggles with injuries sustained during the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“I wanted us to see each other one last time on court, but I don’t want to put my body at risk for that,” Marín shared.
Marín’s decision comes after a long and painful battle with recurring knee injuries that have plagued the latter stages of her career. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries—including a recent third procedure on her right knee—the Spanish star admitted that her body could no longer meet the demands of elite competition.
Her injury struggles date back to 2019, followed by a devastating ACL and meniscus tear in 2021 that ruled her out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The final blow came in Paris 2024, where another rupture ultimately marked what she now considers her unplanned farewell on court.
“Deep down, I did retire on a court — in Paris 2024 — we just didn’t know it at the time.”
While Marín’s résumé boasts Olympic gold and multiple world titles, her influence extends far beyond silverware. She revolutionised badminton in Spain, elevating the sport’s visibility and inspiring a new generation of players across Europe.
Her trademark intensity, relentless energy, and mental toughness made her one of the most formidable opponents of her era—earning admiration not only for her victories but also for her fighting spirit through adversity.
In a poetic twist, Marín revealed she had hoped to end her career at the 2026 European Championships in her hometown of Huelva. While she will no longer compete, she plans to be present—this time as a symbol of gratitude rather than a contender.
“I wanted the journey to end in Huelva… not with a racket in my hand, but in the city where I was born, to close a circle.”
