Malaysia Under-19 futsal national team secured their place in the semi-finals of the ASEAN Boys’ U19 Futsal Championship 2025, despite suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Indonesia in their final Group B match at Nonthaburi PAO Gymnasium, Nonthaburi.
Heading into the encounter, Malaysia knew qualification was still within reach following Indonesia’s 4-1 victory over Myanmar on December 24, with goal difference and head-to-head record set to play a decisive role.
Kelantan FT goalkeeper Ammar Harith Mohammad retained his place between the posts and was immediately called into action. However, Malaysia were stunned as early as the first minute, when Andika Ferdiansyah found the net to give Indonesia a lightning-fast lead.
The early concession did little to dent Malaysia’s composure. Under the guidance of Thai head coach Rakhpol Sainetngam, the young Malaysian side quickly regrouped, tightening their defensive structure and disrupting Indonesia’s attacking rhythm.
Their disciplined approach paid off, with Indonesia unable to extend their advantage before the half-time break.
Indonesia returned with greater attacking intent in the second half, pushing aggressively in search of a second goal. Malaysia, however, stood firm and remained a threat on the counter.
The best chance to draw level fell to Pahang Rangers youngster Adam Rayyan Nor Hisam, whose well-struck effort was superbly denied by the Indonesian goalkeeper.
Despite sustained pressure, Malaysia’s defensive resilience ensured the scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle.
Although defeated, Malaysia progressed as Group B runners-up, courtesy of a superior head-to-head record against Myanmar, sealing their spot in the knockout stage.
The result underlines the growing maturity and competitiveness of Rakhpol Sainetngam’s youthful squad, who now have an opportunity to continue their impressive journey in the semi-finals.
