Malaysia’s journey at the All England Badminton Championships 2025 has come to an end after Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah (women’s doubles) and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie (mixed doubles) were eliminated in the quarter-finals at the Utilita Arena Birmingham.

National women’s doubles pair Pearly and Thinaah put up a valiant fight but ultimately lost to Japan’s Chiharu Shida-Nami Matsuyama in straight sets, 17-21, 19-21.

Despite Pearly battling through an ankle injury sustained in the previous round, the Malaysian duo refused to give up and kept the match competitive until the final point. However, the Japanese pair’s precision and court control proved too much to overcome.

“Full credit to Pearly-Thinaah for showing incredible resilience. Even with Pearly’s injury, they pushed one of the world’s top pairs to the limit,” said a national coach after the match.

Malaysia’s mixed doubles top seeds, Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, also suffered a heartbreaking exit, losing to China’s Jiang Zheng Bang-Huang Dong Ping in a three-set battle.

The Malaysian pair started strong, winning the opening set 21-18, but were completely outplayed in the next two games, losing 8-21, 10-21.

“We had a good start, but we couldn’t maintain the momentum. They were just too strong in the second and third sets,” admitted Shevon after the match.

With both pairs eliminated, Malaysia’s challenge at the prestigious tournament comes to an early end. While it wasn’t the dream run fans had hoped for, the fighting spirit displayed by Pearly-Thinaah and Soon Huat-Shevon remains a source of pride.

The focus now shifts to the upcoming World Tour events, where Malaysia will look to bounce back stronger and continue their pursuit of international success.
