Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani, made a strong start at the All England Open 2025, securing a convincing victory over South Korea’s Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang in their opening match today.
The second-seeded Malaysian duo needed just 37 minutes to dispatch the Korean pair 21-17, 21-14 at the Utilita Arena Birmingham.
The win propels Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between South Korea’s Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae and Thailand’s Kittinupong Kedren-Dechapol Puavaranukroh.
“The game was intense, and I think there were a few lucky shots that went in. We just enjoyed the game to bring out our best,” said Sze Fei in an audio statement shared by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
Earlier, Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, battled through a grueling three-game match to secure their spot in the second round. They overcame Taiwan’s Teng Chun Hsun and Yang Chu Yun in a 19-21, 21-15, 21-13 victory that lasted 65 minutes.
Pearly-Thinaah will now take on another Taiwanese duo, Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Jhih Yun, in the Round of 16.
Malaysia’s mixed doubles campaign took a hit as both Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien suffered first-round exits.
• Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei fell to Indonesia’s Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in a hard-fought match (21-18, 20-22, 11-21).
• Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien bowed out against Denmark’s Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund in straight sets (16-21, 19-21).
Malaysia’s professional men’s doubles pair, Nur Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, also exited the tournament after losing to South Korea’s Kang Minhyuk and Ki Dong Ju (14-21, 12-21).
With Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin and Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah advancing to the next round, Malaysia’s hopes in the All England 2025 remain alive. All eyes will now be on their upcoming matches as they aim for deeper runs in the tournament.
