Selangor FC lost its first match at home after losing to Muangthong United scoring 1-2 in the AFC Champions League Two 2024/25 Group Stage, Group H at MBPJ Stadium, Petaling Jaya.
The hosts began on the front foot, with Nooa Laine coming close in the 4th minute, only to be denied by an impressive save from Muangthong goalkeeper Kittiphong Phoothawchuek. Selangor’s persistence paid off moments later when Yohandry Orozco’s deflected shot landed perfectly for Quentin Cheng, who slotted home to give Selangor a 1-0 lead.
Selangor had opportunities to extend their lead, most notably in the 37th minute when Ahmad Zikri set up Orozco, but the Venezuelan’s shot went narrowly wide, leaving the home side with a slender advantage at halftime.
The Thai side leveled the score eight minutes into the second half through a stroke of misfortune for Selangor, as Harith Haiqal’s misjudged header turned a corner into an opportunity for Felicio Forbes to equalize.
Selangor nearly regained the lead in the 65th minute, but the woodwork denied Ronnie Fernandez and then Alvin Fortes in quick succession.
Muangthong capitalized on another set-piece in the 76th minute. Although Poramet Arjvilai’s initial header was blocked by Zikri, the forward pounced on the rebound to secure the winning goal.
Selangor pressed for an equalizer and came agonizingly close in the 83rd minute when Safuwan Baharudin’s powerful strike hit the post, marking the third time the woodwork thwarted the home team’s efforts.
Despite dominating large portions of the game, Selangor’s inability to convert key chances and their vulnerability on set-pieces proved costly. This loss leaves Selangor with work to do in Group H as they aim to bounce back in the next round.
